Agent- Based Modeling (ABM)

The WHIL-ABM project developed an agent-based model where all households are spatially represented along with their preferred water sources and sanitation sites.   The model is driven by field-based water quality data, characterizations of personal behavior and hygiene practices, and the effects of substandard water quality on children’s growth by assessing diarrheal incidence.  Computer-based simulation of this model allows for in silico testing of proposed water quality interventions and the estimation of expected outcomes on children’s growth.   The model and simulation have been used to assess of the efficacy of slow sand filters, point-of-use ceramic water filters, and changes in hygiene practice such as frequent hand washing.   This process of testing contemplated interventions via an ABM simulation is both rapid and cost effective thus allowing resources to be directed to the most promising interventions.
